Mono Jojoy was born in Cabrera, department (like province or state) of Cundinamarca and entered in 1975 at age 22. He grew up without a father and received a little education. Mono Jojoy was accused in the United States for killing three US citizens in 1999, also accused of terrorism and narcotics trafficking activities, the Colombian government also accused him on charges of rebellion, drug dealing, terrorism, kidnapping and extortion among other crimes.
He also was accused of the detonation of a bomb in Bogotá, there were 36 dead people and injured more than 100 civilians in February 2003. He also may be involved in the kidnapping and murder of three US American missionaries in 1993. He was wanted on drug trafficking charges both in Colombia and the US. In early 2006 he was charged for forcibly recruiting children for the FARC. Mono Jojoy was one of the most important Colombian guerrilla members. The US. Attorney General requested his extradition if he were to have been captured.Mono Jojoy was considered to be one of the most radical rebels in the FARC, he issued the resignation of the town mayors and hundreds of civil employees of the Colombian municipalities, and to kidnap or execute them if they didn´t resign their posts. He has been accused by Colombian authorities of participating in the kidnapping of the presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and the massacre of members from the Turbay family (very important family in Colombia), just a few miles from the former demilitarized area of El Caguan. He was also accused of participating in the kidnapping of three American contractors. A proof of life video of them released by the FARC in 2003 showed Mono Jojoy telling the Americans that they were prisoners and both the US and Colombian government abandoned them. Finally in July, 2008 the Americans were rescued.
On May 11th, 2008 a Colombian military commander told the press that several bodyguards of Mono Jojoy had been plotting to murder the FARC commander to collect US$5 million reward offered on his head. The bodyguards were executed after Mono Jojoy found out about the plot and another three of them escaped. One turned himself into the authorities. Finally on September 23rd, 2010, Mono Jojoy dies after being pursued by the Colombian authorities in an operation called Operation Sodom (Operación Sodoma) that began in the early hours of September 21st in the department of Meta, 120 miles south from Bogotá. To know the exact location, the Colombian army install a GPS in his boots at the attack were aimed at the bunker where he was hiding. The Colombian authorities found fifty computers and 60 USB memories belonging to the Colombia´s largest rebel group. The computers are being examined by 40 experts from the police criminal investigation unit in Bogotá. This has been the most crushing blow the FARC in its entire history, actually more important that the March, 2008 bombing raid across the border with Ecuador that killed the FARC foreign minister Raul Reyes or the bloodless rescue that July freed presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and the three US contracts without firing a shot. The current Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos was the defense minister during both operations.
